How the network works

Maximum carrier independence. Maximum network participation.

Carriers don't run in isolation. On TDS they share inventory, connect schedules and feed each other's routes, while each keeps its own brand, pricing and customers.

Network planning & carrier participation

Our planning team helps each carrier shape its role in the network.

  • Interline agreements and connections, so one carrier's service feeds another's
  • Demand corridors, strategic lanes and underserved areas, urban and rural
  • Bus, rail and shuttle partners planned as one network, not separate operations

Inventory & capacity

Visibility and control over every seat, schedule and partner segment.

  • Shared inventory across participating carriers and partners
  • Seat maps, vehicle and section scheduling, and segments by service type
  • When a trip is full, riders are offered a partner trip or another vehicle

Revenue & yield

Analytics and AI that price the whole network, not just a single trip.

  • Demand forecasts across the network
  • Dynamic pricing and fares set by channel
  • Higher yield from partner connections and wider reach

Multi-carrier ticketing & settlement

Several carriers, one ticket and a fair split.

  • Branded or white-label ticketing on one platform
  • Interline settlement, so partner carriers are paid fairly for every journey
  • One consistent checkout for riders, whichever carrier they travel with

Technology, data & integration

The infrastructure that connects the network to everything else.

  • GTFS and GTFS-Realtime feeds, published to maps, partners and travel apps
  • Webstore, mobile, driver, loyalty and admin apps on the same network layer
  • Payments with fraud protection, Apple Pay and Google Pay

Built into the network

  • Seamless multimodal ticketing
  • Carrier-applied interline logic
  • Cross-carrier inventory
  • AI-optimized routings
  • Dynamic pricing
  • More network selling channels

How we optimize the network

Every departure on TDS is measured against its timetable. We find the routes, stops and road segments that run late or early, and suggest timetables built from real trips, so buses keep to time and riders can trust the times they book.

  • On-time performance for every route, stop and departure
  • Late and early segments found automatically, ranked by impact
  • Suggested timetables, with the on-time gain projected before you publish

Projected on-time departures

Now 34%, from 24 measured trips.

  • Typical trip34% → 45%
  • Most trips on timeBest on-time34% → 71%
  • Only add time34% → 52%

Sample data: fictional routes and stops. Late means 3 min or more after the timetable.

National Bus Traffic Association

All NBTA carriers run on TDS.

The National Bus Traffic Association (NBTA) is the non-profit association and interline clearinghouse for America's private bus carriers, connecting them since 1933. Every NBTA carrier uses TDS, and TDS's Multi-Modal Cloud syncs with NBTA clearing, so riders can travel on one ticket across several bus companies and each carrier is paid its share.

About NBTA at bustraffic.org

  • About $170 million a year in interline ticket sales cleared through NBTA
  • Monthly settlement of interline revenue and shared costs between carriers
  • Through-ticketing and baggage handling across multiple bus companies
  • Auditable data trails that support DOT compliance
  • Rural transit agencies can connect as sponsors, including through Section 5311(f) programs

Sample interline tripFares and shares are illustrative.

  1. One ticket

    Origin → Destination1 ticket · $86

The rider books the whole trip in one search, on any partner's website, app or counter.

  2. Two carriers

    Leg 1Carrier A

    Leg 2Carrier B

Each carrier runs its own leg on one through-ticket, and bags are checked through.

  3. NBTA clearing

    • Sale reported
    • Cleared by NBTA
    • Settled monthly

TDS syncs every bus interline sale with NBTA clearing, which settles between bus carriers each month.

  4. Each carrier paid

    Carrier A$52

    Carrier B$34

Every carrier receives its share of the fare, with an auditable trail behind each payment.

Interline connections TDS supports

  • Intercity bus to Intercity bus
  • Airline to Intercity bus
  • Rail to Intercity bus
  • Intercity bus to Shuttle
  • Intercity bus to Transit

NBTA clearing is for bus carriers only. Airline and rail connections are settled outside NBTA.
